What the heck is Intermittent Fasting?

Fasting-black-and-whiteIntermittent fasting (IF) is a period of time when ZERO calories are consumed.  Typically, fasting starts after the last meal of the day (Supper) till the next meal in the morning called breakfast, like ‘breaking the fast’.  This would be my recommendation for newbies to IF.

It is SUPER important to make sure that you keep yourself hydrated when you are in your fasting period.  You can do this by drinking plain ol’ water, any type of herbal tea, or black coffee.  Make sure you drink the right amount of recommended fluids which is 6-8, 250 ml cups a day (24-hr) period.  If you need more, drink more.  You can refer to my previous blog on hydration for additional information.

However, there are different types of fasts including:

  • The 16/8 method where you would consume ZERO calories for 16 hours and consume calories for 8 hours in every 24-hour period.
  • The 5:2 method where you would consume ZERO calories for two 24-hour periods (or 2 days) in a row to equal 48-hours and consume calories for the next 5 days after. You can continue this cycle every 7 days.
  • The method that I do is 12-hour fasting where you would consume ZERO calories for 12 hours and consume calories for the next 12 in every 24-hour period.
  • And the Eat-stop-eat method when you do one or two 24-hour fasts per week.

These are the main IF people tend to practice.  If you’re new to IF please do this under the supervision of a holistic health practitioner (Holla , I’m right here! 😀 ).

There are many benefits to IF, here are some

  • Improved mental clarity and concentration
  • Increased energy (WOOT!)
  • Improved fat burning (BONUS!)
  • Lower blood insulin and sugar levels (EXTRA BONUS!)
  • Reversed type 2 Diabetes
  • Longevity (Being studied as you read this.)
  • Decreased inflammation (SAY WHAT!)

Intermittent fasting has been around for many, many years.  In fact, it has been around since the ancient Greek times, to the middle ages, and up to modern day life.  More so when food was scarce and there was none to be found, our hunter-gatherer ancestors practiced IF.  It is also practiced in major religions as a form of penitence and self-control.
