What are the Sugar seasons, and how to survive?

The What???? The Sugar seasons! They happen all year, EVERY YEAR! And, there are four of them.

Let’s first talk about the amount of sugar we should consume daily. There is a whopping 4 grams of sugar in one teaspoon.  Let’s put that into perspective, there is almost 10 teaspoons of sugar in ONE CAN of most pops!  The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends no more than 5-10 teaspoons of ADDED or FREE sugar daily. That includes what we add to our drinks, and what we buy in packages, such as breads, pasta, baked good, refined carbs and so on. There are also naturally occurring sugars in some food we eat such as fruits, vegetables (fructose), and some dairy products (Lactose) and these contain important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients  which are important for our bodies to thrive, we can consume in reasonable quantities with a healthful diet.

Did you know there are over 56 different names for sugar? Such as, Sucrose, Maltodextrin, honey, molasses and Lactose just to name a few. The biggest added sugar culprit is High Fructose Corn Syrup. Sugar is hidden in our everyday food, be it organic, packaged, NON- GMO and processed. I ask you to be mindful and read ingredients with all candy and baking you buy around the seasons.

Okay, now there are four sugar seasons, Halloween, Christmas, Easter and Birthday Parties. As you can see, they last all year.

Halloween is a fun time of year for all, especially because we can be silly and get dressed up. Also, the CANDY, from trick or treating is a lot!

  • Have a party and have more healthy snacks like dehydrated fruit and sparkling water.
  • Trick our treat only two to three blocks.
  • Remind your kids, candy is a treat and discuss the restrictions around candy consumption.
  • Give out “treats” other then candy.

 

Christmas is my FAVORITE time of year!!! I Love decorating and spending time with my Fam Jam! But…… the baking and Candy, SO MUCH of it!

  • Focus on family activities other than baking or bake less than usual.
  • Bake with whole ingredients instead of refined
  • Again, remind your family that sugar is a treat and have some cheat days, but not too many I recommend one a week.

 

Easter is also a fun time, especially the chocolate egg hunts.

  • When doing egg hunts, try to use stickers, mini games and so on.
  • Have an Easter party with kids and do games and have prizes.
  • Keep Easter chocolate and treats to a minimum, if buying for your kids.

The last season is Birthday Parties, which happen all year round. With this it is important to let your kids and you have fun.

  • Let your kids have fun!
  • Remind them that candy are treats and to choose healthier options.

 

There are some alarming statistics that I have read about excess sugar consumption.

  • Obesity rates among children and youth in Canada have nearly tripled in the last 30 years.
  • Added sugar may increase your risk of cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
  • Added sugar may increase your risk of depression.
  • Drains your energy, by fluctuating blood sugar.

Don’t get me wrong I am not staying to dismiss the magic of these seasons, but just be mindful of the amount of sugar you and your family consume and enjoy the holidays!
